9-11 June, 2006 The Matter of Race: An Intergenerational Workshop -- Where We Go From Here? Tod Ewing and Barry Magnus This workshop is designed to be intergenerational and will provide a unique opportunity to gain perspective on the issues of race that still confront our community. It is clearly advantageous to have a blend of youth and elders in a mutually reinforcing learning experience on such a vital issue, not just for the experience itself, but also to gain meaningful understanding and practical methods to become more effective race unity workers in the community.
24-26 March, 2006 The Origins of the Baha’i Faith in Black America Jerome ’Jay’ Green This is an inspiring multimedia presentation that documents the development and organization of an extraordinary initiative on race which began in 1921. Inspired by the counsels of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, these “Race Amity Conventions” were specifically designed to heal America’s deep-seated racial divide and bring to the forefront the spiritual basis necessary for doing so. A commitment to the universal realization of Human and Spiritual Oneness--as seen through the Race Amity Conventions--not only makes the American Bahá’í community one of the first religious populations to initiate amity activities, but the first to elicit interfaith and inter-organizational support. Join us as we survey the majority of these activities and provide a biographical and statistical glimpse into the fascinating lives of some of the first African-Americans to declare their belief in Bahá’u’lláh’s teachings--teachings which would universalize their struggles and equip them with a sense of “human” dignity rather than “social” or “racial” dignity alone. (The children attending this program with their parents will be involved in the Children’s Theatre Company children’s program.) Includes classes for ages 4-14.
